My Thoughts: This was a very well written historical fiction novel. I did not realize that I was going to learn a lot more about WWII in this book. I was completely awed by all the information that was given as well as the beautiful story of Hank and Roberta.
The story was very captivating and educational. The plot began with Hank entering the military with a very touching scene between Hank and his father. It then moved on to Hank's torturous life in the military due to a man named Haynes, to meeting Roberta, and to Hank and Roberta trying to stay together. Every scene was told with historical facts as to what happened during the particular time in that location. What fascinated me the most about all these facts was seeing the German side of the war. Not all Germans were evil, so it was an eye-opener to see how many of the German soldiers had little choice in what Hitler demanded and I learned on how much the German people suffered after the war ended.
Next, the emotions in this book were quite real. Everything was described as if the author himself were actually there. I felt the pain and sorrow that all the people went through with the war. I felt the anger of those who felt betrayed, especially of the soldier named Haynes (a scary man, by the way). I also felt the glee and innocent love that was between Roberta and Hank. Glen Thomas Hierleier did a wonderful job in capturing the characters' feelings as well as the real emotions that surrounded these tragic events.
This was a very well written story. The only reason why I didn't give it a five star rating was that I felt that the historical information deviated from the plot of the story a few times. Don't get me wrong, all this information was great but after a while, I found myself forgetting what the plot was about. Other than that, I simply enjoyed this book. A word of caution though, be prepare to share a tear or two towards the end of the book. I rate it:
